Every landscape tells a story. From its ancient formations to its climactic changes, the geology of coastal Maine has a particularly rich sense of place. At Spatterdock Pottery, I seek to capture that terroir in 100% sustainably made eartherware. My clay is locally sourced from the Presumpscot Formation, a ribbon of marine clay glacially deposited during the last ice age. I harvest the clay by hand, then process it using traditional methods honed over generations: evaporative slaking, coiling, and earthen slump molds. The resulting bowls and sculptures are then pit-fired using materials from my regenerative woodlot and sealed with lime and beeswax. What results are objects that reflect the natural beauty and deep ecology of the Midcoast.
